WHAT IS IT?
A beginner’s/introductory MaxMSP Workshop. This is a general workshop and will not be focusing
on specific artistic applications like sound, video or performance. However the workshop will seemingly
have more focus towards sound/music because the easiest application is sound/music
WHAT IS MaxMSP?
MaxMSP is a realtime software/programming environment which has a broad range of artistic
application ranging from electronic music to media installations. It was first developed in the 80s at
IRCAM (computer music institute in Paris) by Miller S Puckette and Max Mathews. It is quite a popular
software utilized by sound/visual/new media artists interested in real-time performance and interactive
installation environments

BASIC OBJECTIVES
- Its hoped that the workshop will spark participant’s interest and provide a new door/avenue/tool in
pursuing his/her creative endeavours.
- The most basic objective is for the participant to know -> learn the software/tool.
1. Open up possibilities with a new playaround tool (creative/technical/…)
2. Learn how to start and setup Max/MSP and use it on its own or with your normal assortment of tools
3. Learn the basic principles of Max/MSP and tools of its type
4. Learn the most bare bones specifics of creating something in Max/MSP
5. Learn wider assortment of specifics/specific objects in Max/MSP
Workshop wont teach participants how to apply it specifically to their life/art/expression/. What the workshop wont do
1. wont teach you programming
2. wont teach you how to make music/visuals/art
3. possibly wont teach you specific practical things that you want to do that you can apply to your own art/visuals/music/expression
WHO IS THE WORKSHOP PRESENTER?
Aziz Ali belongs to the Studio in Cheras KL, an independently run art studio. He is a simple programmer
who has been involved in theatre, underground music and private artistic enterprise.
WHAT LANGUAGE WILL IT BE HELD IN?
- Workshop will be held mainly in English and Bahasa Melayu. However a lot of the instructions are visual
and most of the workshop will be practical.
- If there are many participants who can only understand one language (ie Mandarin) we will try to get
additional interpreters/helpers for translation.
PARTICIPANTS
- Participation is limited to about ~20 people
- There is no fee charged for participation
- Participants are required RSVP to a Notthatbalai representative or email the workshop presenter directly
1-2 weeks before the workshop date. However, if you come on the day itself, and if there is still time and
space in the venue, participation is possible.
- Participation will be first come first served, depending on requirements. If we are unable to provide you
computers (shared or otherwise) and if there is a strong language barrier, then your participation in the
workshop might not be accepted.
- If there is a lack of computers, participants hopefully can share computers.
BARE WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
- Workshop will run for 6 hours not inclusive of setup time and intermission.
- There will be a 2 hour setup time prior to the start of the workshop where it is expected all participants will
setup and settle down.
- Workshop presenter will provide the software by providing download instructions prior to the workshop date.
All software provided will be demo software. Workshop presenter will also provide the software during the 2
hour setup time
- The workshop will mainly work on practical usage and bits of theory. Specific demonstrations will be done
by the presenter himself ie interfacing cameras etc. Hopefully at the end of the workshop a short
performance/presentation can be held with all the workshop participants.
